What to Pack for a Day Trip in Abel Tasman

The weather can shift fast in the park. Here's a practical packing list for cruise, walk and kayak day trips alike.

Abel Tasman has a well-earned reputation for sunshine, but conditions on the water and in the bush can change quickly, and a day trip with the wrong gear is a much less comfortable day trip. Here's what we'd actually pack.

The essentials

  • Sun protection: sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. The UV here is strong even on overcast days, and you'll spend long stretches with no shade on the water.
  • A light, packable rain layer: even on a forecast-clear day, coastal weather can turn. A compact waterproof jacket takes up almost no space.
  • Comfortable, broken-in footwear: sandals are fine for the boat, but if your day includes any walking, bring shoes you can wear on uneven track surfaces.
  • Drinking water: more than you think you'll need, especially on warmer days or longer walking legs.

If your trip includes a walk

  • A small day pack rather than a handbag or shoulder bag
  • Insect repellent: sandflies are most noticeable near estuaries and at dusk
  • A few snacks if your lunch is a packed picnic rather than onboard catering

If your trip includes kayaking

  • Quick-dry clothing rather than cotton, you will get wet
  • A change of clothes left at the lodge or in the car for afterwards
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, applied well before you're on the water

What you don't need to bring

Most guided trips include life jackets, kayaks and paddling gear, picnic or onboard catering depending on the trip, and a guide who knows the tides and conditions. Check your specific trip's inclusions before over-packing, there's rarely a need to bring your own safety gear.

A note on valuables

Phones and cameras are worth a waterproof pouch or dry bag if you're kayaking, or simply keeping zipped away on a cruise. Splashback is common even on calm days.

Pack light, pack for sun and a quick change in weather, and you'll be set for almost anything the park throws at you on a single day out.
